During the school year, it’s crucial to have fun and meaningful activities that captivate your little learners. Opting for activities that offer practice across various skills is a bonus! Below are a few (but certainly not all) of my preferred activities to kickstart a fun academic journey for you and your kindergarteners.
Names
Everyone possesses a name, a fundamental skill we typically focus on initially. Mastering the ability to identify, spell, and write our names is crucial. Letter Names, Sounds and Writing
Letter names and sounds are foundational literacy skills that will be continuously taught and reinforced throughout the kindergarten school year. While these activities are just the beginning and not exhaustive, they serve as a solid foundation for your little learners to develop proficiency. These activities can be implemented in various settings such as whole group, small group, with partners, independently, and at your literacy centers. Rhyming
Rhyming plays a crucial role in developing phonemic awareness and preparing children for reading. Incorporating fun and interactive activities into your daily kindergarten routine can be both educational and enjoyable. Here are a few of my top picks. Syllables
Syllables and rhyming are closely linked skills. As they both involve auditory abilities, the emphasis is on listening and understanding rather than physical manipulation or using props. These activities can be considered as “lights out, eyes closed” exercises – you can even practice them with your eyes closed. Visual aids are not essential for students to learn or practice rhyming and syllables, although they can be helpful. (Go to-Tips For Teaching Syllables To Little Learners for more information.)

Sequencing
As sequencing is crucial for logical development, incorporating various activities in the kindergarten classroom is essential. Identifying what comes first, in the middle, and last requires understanding sequencing. (For more-Sequencing Activities for Kindergarteners)
