Letters, Words, Sentences – Oh My! Wondering how to introduce and practice these academic literacy concepts to your kindergarteners? Here is a fun and interactive way for Teaching Letters vs. Words vs. Sentences to Little Learners.

Introducing Letters, Words, and Sentences in Kindergarten

In the initial weeks of kindergarten, the focus is on teaching your students about letters, progressing to words, and ultimately sentences. How can you effectively introduce, instruct, and reinforce these distinctions? Here’s a fun, engaging and interactive method to help you out!

• Begin with a pocket chart. Take a sentence strip and write “These are Letters” with a sharpie. Place this strip at the top of the pocket chart.
• Next- proceed by writing random letters on another sentence strip, cutting them out individually, and placing them below the heading strip on the chart.
• Then, prepare a new sentence strip with the text “These are Words” and place it in the pocket chart.
• Write words on strips, cut them out, and add them to the chart.
• Conclude by writing “These are Sentences” on a strip and including some sentences on the anchor chart.
• Now, you can demonstrate and practice Teaching Letters vs. Words vs. Sentences to Little Learners effectively.

It’s crucial to remember that little learners benefit from explicit instruction. Never assume they already understand these concepts!

  1. Explicitly teaching letters vs. words is so important at the beginning of the school year. I love the idea of using a pocket chart to display the differences between letters, words and sentences. After implanting this activity, I would like to extend it by having my students categorize the sentence strips to see if they are able to identify the differences between letters, words and sentences. Thank you so much for this idea!
