Looking for fun and engaging ways to teach characters & settings to your kindergarten students? Here are my top 3 Ways To Teach and Practice Characters & Settings in Kindergarten with purpose and fun!
Songs
First way to introduce and teach characters and settings is with music and a song. Little learners love singing! They love learning and practicing academic skills through music and songs. (They aren’t even bothered whether you sing in tune or not!) Children frequently grasp a skill more effectively and quickly when it is accompanied by music. This particular song is interactive and comes from Heidi Songs. Your kindergartners will love learning and singing about characters and settings with this fun and engaging song. (Here are the words, but catch the tune from the above Heidi Songs link.)
Games
The second activity involves playing a sorting game with characters and settings cards (Character & Setting Cards for Beginning Writers | Story Elements). Grab your pocket chart and have your students insert the characters or settings cards by categorizing them into the pockets under the appropriate title. This interactive and engaging activity is suitable for whole group participation, small groups, working with a partner, or independent practice.
Mystery Character
The third and final activity is “Let’s Play Mystery Character!” Have your little learners pick a character or setting card out of a brown paper bag. Then, have them paste it onto a page in their drawing journal. Finally, they can draw a matching character or setting. (Don’t forget to grab this **FREEBIE**)
Now you have 3 engaging, meaningful, and hands-on methods to teach and practice characters and settings in kindergarten. It’s a win-win for all your little learners!
