Truly Decodable Readers
As a kindergarten teacher, I was frustrated with the lack of truly decodable readers for my students. I needed books that were simple, had the decodable words my students were learning, and were not to lengthy. I finally had to create my own!!
Leveled Readers VS. Decodable Readers
Many teachers and parents think leveled readers are a good choice for emergent readers. I disagree!! Leveled reader books rely heavily on illustrations and context for the little learners to read unfamiliar words. Decodable readers focus on a singular phonics pattern and repeat this pattern throughout the small book. Although decodable reader books do have pictures, they only add to the book and cannot be relied on for reading. The student must decode the words.
I have found that emergent readers are much more successful when they have books available for repetitive readings that have truly decodable words that they are currently learning. Decodable books give ample opportunity to practice decoding and word recognition. I also believe decodables need to accommodate little learners abilities and stamina.
