Everyone’s got a name – could be short, could be a tongue-twister! For kids, their name is usually the first thing they recognize and proudly scribble on their own. Along with all the coloring and doodling, mastering writing their name is a big win! Let’s dive into 2 Fun Name Activities For Your Little Learners to begin the new school year.

Experienced kindergarten teachers are aware that most incoming kindergarteners may struggle with recognizing, spelling, or writing their own name. Hence, this becomes one of the initial skills we focus on teaching and practicing with our little learners. Here are some of my favorite multi-purposeful name activities for the beginning of kindergarten.

Name Poem

This name poem is a must-have for the beginning of the school year. It not only introduces print concepts but also establishes routine, fosters classroom community, and encourages familiarity with classmates’ names. The poem is easy to say, but can also be taught in a sing-song way. Simply write it on an anchor chart or a dry erase easel and have fun!

To enhance the learning experience, use picture name cards and a pocket chart. Begin by reciting the poem as a whole group and practice 4-5 names daily. Now your students can independently ‘read’ the poem using the name cards. It’s a delightful way to engage little learners, reinforce name recognition, and introduce fundamental print concepts.

Playdough Name Mats

This activity is essential for every kindergarten classroom. It’s not just fun, engaging, and versatile, but it also helps develop fine motor skills. Students will enjoy this interactive task as they practice recognizing and spelling their names.
