Returning to school after the holidays can present a distinctive challenge for kindergarten teachers, as little learners come back filled with excitement and distractions from their break. Here are some of my effective Classroom Management After The Holidays strategies that have proven successful for me.

Classroom management following the holidays can present distinct challenges, primarily due to residual distractions and heightened excitement. What strategies can we implement to refocus and sustain our progress for the upcoming month, ahead of the next holiday and winter break?

Re-establish Routines

Children thrive on routines, and after a break, it’s essential to reintroduce daily schedules. Begin by reviewing the class schedule and daily routines. Use visual aids, such as an anchor chart, to help reinforce what the day will look like. This will provide a sense of security and predictability for your little learners. Set Clear Expectations

Remind your kindergarteners of the classroom rules and expectations. Use positive language to outline behaviors that are encouraged, such as being kind, listening when others are speaking, and following directions. (Listening and Following Directions Activities for Little Learners)

Teaching Little Learners is not just about letters and numbers, but it also includes teaching them how to listen and follow directions! And so I created these simple Riddle This – Listen and Respond activities that are perfect for whole and small group! There are 8 ‘riddles’ on each page. You read aloud and give specific directions, like color or cross out. Little Learners will learn how to listen to oral directions and respond correctly! And did I mention that these are sooo fun!! #kindergartenchaos #kindergarten #followdirections #backtoschool2024

Icebreaker Activities

Begin the first day back with fun icebreaker activities that allow your students to share their holiday experiences. This can help re-establish connections among classmates and create a positive classroom atmosphere. Activities like “show and tell” or drawing pictures of their favorite holiday memory can foster communication and creativity.

Decorate the Classroom

Take down all of the Thanksgiving decor and redecorate to reflect the new season or upcoming themes. This can make your little learners excited to return and learn.

Patience and Flexibility

Understand that each student will adjust at their own pace. Be prepared for a range of emotions and behaviors as they re-acclimate. Flexibility in your approach will allow you to adapt to their needs and maintain a harmonious classroom environment. Remember they are only 5 and need time and space to adjust to returning to a schedule. (4 Tips for Keeping a Positive Mindset in the Classroom)

By implementing these strategies, you can create a smooth transition back to school after the holidays, fostering an atmosphere that encourages learning, social interaction, and emotional well-being.
