December has arrived with a festive bang!!! What fun and engaging math activities are you cooking up for your little kindergarteners? Well, hold onto your hats, because here are some of my all-time faves to sprinkle into your repertoire. Don’t let these December Math Activities for Little Learners slip away!
December rolls in like a whirlwind for public schools, thanks to holidays and winter break (at least in my neck of the woods). As kindergarten teachers, we need math activities that are not just fun but also pack a punch in learning, giving our students some solid practice. Dive into these delightful options for a December that’s both engaging and meaningful!
Count and Match
Counting is a fundamental kindergarten standard that we focus on and have our students practice throughout the year. These engaging and themed Count and Match activities are ideal for your math centers this month. Your little learners will love the gingerbread house theme, which can easily be incorporated into the variety of other gingerbread activities for this month.
**FREEBIE** Decomposing Activity
The Gingerbread Man House Math FREEBIE is an ideal activity for composing and decomposing during the weeks between Thanksgiving and the Winter break. This engaging activity will be a hit with both you and your students, making it a great way to teach and practice this skill.
Winter Counting 10-20 Frames
These winter-themed math cards provide an interactive way for your little learners to practice counting and writing numerals, utilizing both 10 and 20 frames. This activity not only reinforces essential early math skills but also promotes fine motor development and handwriting practice. The set includes cards featuring printed snowflake counters, allowing your students to count and record the total. Additionally, there are cards displaying printed numerals where your kindergarteners can match the counters to the corresponding number, making this math practice both fun and meaningful.
Shapes and Geometry
Have a shape hunt throughout the classroom, encouraging your little learners to search for winter-themed items that correspond with particular shapes (such as circular snowballs or triangular trees). Afterward, they can either draw or create a collage featuring the shapes they discovered. Additionally, you could incorporate this activity into the K.G. Geometry Standards BUNDLE for Kindergarten Math for excellent hands-on practice with these worksheets.
Keep in mind that offering a variety of hands-on, interactive themed math activities for your kindergarteners not only allows for meaningful practice of math skills but also makes learning fun!!!
