Animal pattern blocks are one of those simple classroom activities that can turn a bucket of colorful shapes into SO much learning! If you have a tub, bin, or bucket of pattern blocks hiding somewhere in your classroom closet, pull them out! Your little learners can use those familiar hexagons, trapezoids, rhombuses, squares, and triangles for much more than simply making pretty pictures.

And today, I have a **FREEBIE** Animal Pattern Blocks activity that makes it easy to get those pattern blocks into your students’ hands and turn them into purposeful, hands-on learning.
Why I Love Animal Pattern Blocks
I love activities that look like play but are actually packed with learning. That’s exactly what happens when students work with pattern blocks.
While your little learners are busy creating an animal, they are also practicing:
- Shape recognition
- Visual discrimination
- Spatial reasoning
- Fine-motor skills
- Problem-solving
- Counting
- One-to-one correspondence
- Following directions
- Perseverance
- Mathematical language
And the best part? Students don’t feel like they’re “doing schoolwork.” They’re building. They’re creating. They’re figuring things out. They’re trying a piece, moving it, turning it, and deciding what might fit next. That’s the kind of hands-on learning I love for little learners!

Grab the FREEBIE Animal Pattern Blocks Activity
This animal pattern blocks **freebie** is a simple way to introduce or reinforce pattern block skills while giving your students an engaging task to complete. Students use their pattern blocks to build an animal picture by matching the shapes to the design.
You can use the activity during:
- Math centers
- Independent work
- Small groups
- Early finishers
- Morning tubs
- Fast-finisher activities
It’s also an easy activity to pull out when you need something meaningful that doesn’t require a lot of teacher prep. Print it, grab your pattern blocks, and you’re ready to go!

Turn Pattern Blocks Into Purposeful Learning
One of my favorite things about animal pattern blocks is how easy it is to add an academic component. Instead of simply saying, “Build the animal,” ask questions while students work. Try asking: “What shape did you use?” “How many triangles do you see?” “Which shape did you use the most?” “How many shapes did you use altogether?” “Can you find a hexagon?” “What happens if you turn that piece?” “Can you make the same animal using fewer pieces?” These little conversations turn a fun center into a rich math experience. And you don’t need a complicated lesson plan to make it happen. Just let the pattern blocks do the work!
What Makes Pattern Blocks So Great for Little Learners?
There is something special about giving little learners actual objects they can touch, move, turn, and manipulate. Pattern blocks give children a concrete way to explore early math concepts. A child may not be able to explain what spatial reasoning is, but they can absolutely figure out that a triangle needs to be turned to fit. They may not be ready to talk about composing shapes mathematically, but they can put two smaller shapes together and notice that they created something new. That hands-on experience matters.
Animal pattern blocks also give students an opportunity to practice problem-solving without the pressure of getting every answer right the first time. If a piece doesn’t fit? Try again. Turn it. Move it. Try another shape. That’s productive reasoning in a very little-learner-friendly package!
And If You Love Pattern Block Activities…
If you like pattern block activities for little learners that are purposeful, fun, and engaging—especially activities that actually use those buckets of pattern blocks teachers have hidden in closets and bins—you NEED my Pattern Block Bundle!

Seriously. If you already have pattern blocks sitting in your classroom, why not put them to work? This Pattern Block Bundle is designed to give you a collection of ready-to-use activities so you can easily download and print the resource, pull out your pattern blocks, and get students working. No complicated setup. No piles of worksheets. No sitting at a table telling your students exactly what to do every second. Just hands-on, purposeful learning with materials you already have. That’s a win in my book!
Easy Ways to Use the Pattern Block Bundle
There are so many ways to use pattern block activities throughout the school year.
1. Math Centers
Put a few activity pages and a tub of pattern blocks at a center. Students can work independently or with a partner while you work with a small group.
2. Small-Group Math
Use the activities with a small group and listen to your students explain how they decided which shapes to use. This is a great opportunity to sneak in math vocabulary and questioning.
3. Early Finishers
Instead of another worksheet, give your little learners a meaningful hands-on activity they can complete independently.
4. Morning Work
Pattern blocks are a fun alternative to the same old morning worksheet. Set out an activity page with a basket of blocks and let students get started as they come in.
5. Fast, Easy Sub Plans
Keep a few pattern block activities ready to go. They are easy for another teacher to understand and require very little preparation.
So there you have it! All the reasons why pattern block activities belong in your classroom, plus easy ideas for making them part of your kindergarten curriculum. They’re hands-on, purposeful, engaging, and a great way to get those pattern blocks out of the closet and into your students’ hands. Don’t miss out—grab the FREE animal pattern block activity and start making math fun!
