5 Fun Name Activities for Kindergarten Students

Welcome back for Day 2 of 31 Days of Kindergarten!

Kindergarten name activities are one of the most important things I introduce during the first few weeks of school. The beginning of kindergarten is all about helping little learners feel comfortable, confident, and excited about coming to school each day. Since a child’s name is often the very first word they learn to recognize, it provides the perfect foundation for early literacy skills.

These kindergarten name activities are a fun and engaging way to help students practice letter recognition, name identification, and fine motor skills while building confidence from day one. If you’re looking for simple, hands-on activities your little learners will love, I’ve got you covered. These are some of my favorite ways to make name practice meaningful, playful, and memorable for your kindergartners.

Why Name Activities Matter

Name activities will help your students:

  • Learn letter recognition
  • Practice letter order
  • Strengthen fine motor skills
  • Build confidence
  • Develop early literacy skills

And the best part? Kindergarteners LOVE seeing and working with their own names!

1. Sentence Strip Name Puzzle

This is a kindergarten classic for a reason!

Simply write your student’s name on a sentence strip and cut between the letters. Students put the pieces back together to build their names.

It’s simple, effective, and perfect for the beginning of the new school year.

Plus, little learners feel so successful when they can independently put their names together.

2. Playdough Name Building

If there is playdough involved, students are automatically interested!

Have your students roll playdough into long “snakes” and form the letters in their names. This activity gives those little fingers a great workout while practicing letter formation.

It’s a win-win:

  • Fine motor practice
  • Letter recognition
  • Hands-on learning
  • Lots of engagement

Here is one name activity that your New Little Learners will absolutely LOVE! Playdough Name Mats! This product is editable, so each friend can have their own! First type in and add each student’s name. Next, print out on cardstock, laminate and cut apart. This makes this activity so much easier to reuse again and again. Finally add in the playdough and practice building those names. This also includes a cute Back to School Poem, with editable teacher message! These can be given as student gifts for Meet the Teacher, Back to School Night or even just to use as name practice in the classroom! Just remember Everybody has a name…Love from Kindergarten Chaos #kindergartenchaos #teachersoftiktok #backtoschool2024 #handsonlearning

3. Pool Noodle & Popsicle Stick Name Building

Talk about inexpensive fun!

Write letters on cut pool noodle pieces or popsicle sticks and let your students build their names. They can mix, match, arrange, and rearrange the letters until they get them just right.

My students always think they’re playing a game when they’re actually practicing important literacy skills.

Teacher win!

4. Name Mosaic

This activity turns name practice into a work of art.

Write or have your students write their names in large letters on sentence strips. Then have them glue tissue paper scraps for a beautiful fun name activiy.

Not only are they practicing name recognition, but they’re also creating a beautiful classroom display.

And let’s be honest—we all love adorable hallway displays during those first few weeks of school!

5. Build Your Name Ten-Frame

This activity combines literacy and math in one fun center.

Students use counters, mini erasers, pom-poms, cubes, or any manipulatives you have on hand to cover the letters in their names.

This simple activity helps your students:

  • Recognize letters
  • Count objects
  • Develop one-to-one correspondence
  • Strengthen fine motor skills

And because manipulatives are involved, engagement is always high!

Why Kindergarten Name Activities Matter

Learning names is so much more than a beginning-of-the-year activity. Strong name recognition skills help students build confidence, develop letter knowledge, and create important connections to reading and writing. When children can recognize, spell, and build their names, they are laying the groundwork for future literacy success.

The best part about these kindergarten name activities is that they don’t feel like work to your students. Through hands-on play, movement, and engaging materials, your little learners are developing essential skills while having fun.

As you continue following along with 31 Days of Kindergarten, you’ll discover even more simple, effective strategies to help your students learn, grow, and thrive during those important first weeks of school. Be sure to save your favorite kindergarten name activities so you’re ready to start the school year with confidence!
