???? Read Across America Week 2026 — Kindergarten Activities

National Read Across America Week (March 2–6, 2026) is the perfect time to turn your kindergarten classroom into a joyful hub of stories, laughter, and literacy fun. For our little learners, success means high engagement, lots of movement, and just the right amount of “controlled chaos.” Think hands-on activities, playful themes, and minimal sitting — all designed to keep wiggly bodies busy while building a love of reading. Below you’ll find a full week plan with simple, step-by-step ideas that are realistic, classroom-tested, and guaranteed to make literacy feel like a celebration.

???? Monday — Silly Stories & Rhymes

Cat Hat Craft + Wearable Literacy

Make simple striped hats using sentence strips and red/white paper. Your students can glue, decorate, and wear them during read-aloud. Instant buy-in.

Green Eggs Voting Graph

Show silly foods (real or pictures). Have your little learners vote “Try It” or “No Way.” Build a giant graph together. Count, compare, celebrate strong opinions.

Rhyming Toss

Sit in a circle. Toss a soft ball. Say rhyming words. Quick pace = high engagement.

???? Chaos Tip: Keep rounds short so everyone stays focused.

???? Tuesday — Favorite Book Day

Bring-a-Book Share

Each students can share a favorite book from home or the classroom library.

Keep it manageable:

*1–2 sentences only

*Model first

*Applaud every speaker

Book Buddy Reading

Pair your students to “read” picture books together. Emphasize talking about pictures, retelling, and pointing to words.

Draw Your Favorite Part

Simple response sheet:

My favorite part was ______.

Expect stick figures. That’s perfect.

???? Wednesday — Story Acting Day

Kindergartners LOVE drama. Use it.

Act-It-Out Retell

Read a familiar story. Assign roles. Act it out with simple props (paper crowns, animal ears, etc.).

No memorization. Just guided play.

Story Sequence Cards

Have your students put 3–4 pictures in order: beginning, middle, end.

Then they “tell” the story to a partner.

Movement Break: Freeze Like a Character

Call out characters. Students freeze in a pose.

???? Thursday — Author & Illustrator Day

Directed Drawing

Choose a character and draw step-by-step. Add labels or simple sentences.

Directed drawing builds confidence AND early writing skills.(Guided Directed Draw & Write for Beginning Writers Activities)

Make-Your-Own Book

Staple a few pages together:

*Page 1: Title + author (their name!)

*Pages 2–4: Pictures + simple sentences

*Last page: “The End”

Read books aloud to the class if time allows.

???? Chaos Tip: Pre-staple books. Do not hand out staplers. Ever.

???? Friday — Pajamas & Reading Celebration

End strong but calm.

Flashlight Reading

Dim lights. Have your students read with flashlights (real or pretend). Instant magic.

Reading Stations

Rotate through short activities:

*Listening center

*Puzzle station

*Buddy reading

*Coloring bookmarks

*Keep rotations quick (10–12 minutes).

Certificate or Bookmark Send-Off

Celebrate them as readers. Big deal energy.

Why This Week Works

✔ Movement built in
✔ Short activities with clear goals
✔ Academic skills hidden inside fun
✔ Minimal prep compared to themed chaos weeks
✔ Maximum kindergarten joy

By the end of the week, your classroom may be louder, messier, and running on pure excitement — but your little learners will feel confident, successful, and proud of themselves as readers.

And honestly? That’s the whole point. ????✨
