December is a magical time in the kindergarten classroom. It’s the perfect chance to mix holiday excitement with purposeful learning. From gingerbread-themed literacy activities to snowy math games and hands-on crafts, these ideas keep little learners engaged. They also build essential skills in literacy, math, and fine motor development. Best of all, these activities are budget-friendly and work great in the classroom, homeschool, or small groups.

Gingerbread Literacy Activities
I absolutely LOVE using a gingerbread theme during the month of December! It’s festive, engaging, and full of magic—without interfering with any students’ religious beliefs, making it the perfect all-inclusive classroom theme. Gingerbread activities bring instant excitement to centers, small groups, and whole-group lessons, and my little learners always beg for more. Here are some of my favorite gingerbread literacy activities to use throughout the month. And if you’re looking for even more ideas, don’t forget to check out this previous post: “Top 2 Favorite Gingerbread Activities for Kindergarten.”
Gingerbread CVC Word Game
Spice up your literacy lessons this season with the Gingerbread CVC Words activity! It’s perfect for adding festive fun to phonics practice. This decodable activity can be used in many ways—whole-group, small groups, with partners, or independently. Use it in a pocket chart or as a hands-on tabletop game. The set includes 36 colorful CVC picture cards, 36 matching Gingerbread Man word cards, and response sheets for every learner. Plus, there are optional game boards—four with 9 words each and one with all 36 words. This lets you mix it up and keep students engaged. Available in full color or black-and-white, it’s ready to print and play for a sweet, educational twist this holiday season!

Gingerbread Story Sequencing
After reading Gingerbread Baby, keep the excitement going with this adorable picture book activity pack! It’s the perfect way to help little learners deepen their understanding of the story while practicing essential literacy skills. Students can sequence events, write about the story, retell key parts, and complete a fun craft that brings the book to life. These engaging activities support reading comprehension, build vocabulary, and strengthen storytelling skills—all while keeping the gingerbread magic alive!

❄️ Winter Math & Counting
Winter is such a magical season—even here in Las Vegas, Nevada, where snow is more of a rare surprise than a regular occurrence! Many of my students have never experienced real snow, which makes winter and snow-themed activities even more exciting. Bringing these themes into our academics opens the door to fun, imaginative lessons and wonderful conversations as little learners explore what winter is all about.
Snowman Counting Mats
One of my favorite winter-themed math activities to use in centers or morning tubs is the Count & Match Snowman Buttons set. These adorable snowman counting mats (numbers 1–30!) make practicing number recognition, counting, and one-to-one correspondence both meaningful and fun. Students can use real buttons, pom-poms, or mini cotton balls to “dress” each snowman with the correct number of buttons, which naturally encourages hands-on learning and independent exploration. You can easily differentiate by choosing higher-number mats or adding in the bonus addition mat for students who are ready for a challenge. This activity works beautifully for independent practice, partner work, or small groups, and includes number mats in full color and black-and-white, printable button counters, and a simple recording sheet. It’s the perfect winter math station to keep little learners engaged and building foundational skills all season long!

Winter Patterning Activities
Another winter favorite in our math centers is Winter Patterning Activities using snowflakes, mittens, and gingerbread men cutouts. These simple, seasonal manipulatives instantly turn pattern practice into a fun hands-on experience for little learners. Students can build ABAB, ABC, and even more complex patterns as they explore colors, shapes, and sequencing. Patterning is an essential early algebra skill, and this activity helps strengthen visual discrimination while keeping learning playful and purposeful. Plus, the winter-themed pieces make the task exciting and easy to differentiate for all levels in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade!
✂️ Winter Fine Motor Fun
Winter is the perfect time to sprinkle a little extra magic into your fine motor practice! From tiny mittens to sparkly snowflakes, winter-themed activities make strengthening those small hand muscles feel like play instead of work. Little learners love the hands-on, seasonal excitement, and you’ll love watching their cutting, tracing, squeezing, and pinching skills grow with every activity. Get ready for some Winter Fine Motor Fun that keeps your classroom buzzing with engagement all season long!
Snowflake Cutting Practice
Snowflake Cutting Practice is always a winter hit with little learners! Kids love creating their own paper snowflakes, and you’ll love how this simple activity strengthens hand muscles, improves scissor control, and builds cutting precision. Give students folded paper and let them snip away—every snowflake turns out unique and magical! Once they’re finished, display their creations around the room for an instant winter wonderland that your students will be proud to show off. And if you’re looking for even more seasonal inspiration, be sure to check out “Winter Art and Learning Activities for Kindergarten” for additional winter-themed ideas!
Snowball Toss
Snowball Toss is a playful way to get little learners moving while practicing important skills! Using soft pom-poms as “snowballs,” students toss them into labeled buckets to work on counting, number recognition, or sight words. This hands-on activity not only reinforces early math and literacy skills but also builds coordination and gross motor control. It’s perfect for small groups, centers, or even a quick brain break—plus, kids love the chance to throw (and catch!) their way to learning success.
💡 Classroom Tips for December
Rotate activities in small groups to keep your little learners engaged and on task, and don’t be afraid to use budget-friendly supplies from places like Dollar Tree to create seasonal, hands-on learning experiences. Incorporate movement breaks—think “Frosty Freeze” or “Gingerbread Hop”—to help little learners burn off extra energy while staying in the holiday spirit. Displaying student work turns your classroom into a winter wonderland, motivating learners and celebrating their creativity. And whenever possible, plan activities that blend literacy, math, and fine motor practice to make every moment of December learning purposeful and fun!
