Welcome back to Day 15 of our 31 Days of Kindergarten series!
Let’s talk about one of my favorite classroom management tools that costs absolutely nothing but pays off BIG all year long: kindergarten classroom jobs.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re the only person in the room responsible for everything, this post is for you. From passing out papers to turning on classroom technology, there are dozens of ways your students can help keep your classroom running smoothly.
The best part? Kindergarteners LOVE having jobs.
There is just something magical about giving a five-year-old a special responsibility. Suddenly, taking attendance becomes the most important job in the world. Carrying lunchboxes to the cafeteria feels like a mission. And being the line leader? That’s basically kindergarten royalty.
When students have classroom jobs, they’re doing much more than helping you.
Kindergarten classroom jobs help students:
Many teachers notice fewer behavior issues when students have meaningful responsibilities because children feel invested in the classroom environment.
Over the years, I’ve tried lots of different classroom job systems. The one that works best for me?
One Classroom Manager of the Day.
Instead of managing dozens of job changes every week, one student serves as the classroom manager for the entire day.
This student helps with:
Every child gets a turn throughout the year, and everyone knows their special day is coming. Simple. Easy. Effective.
If you prefer assigning individual jobs, here are some classroom favorites that kindergarteners can handle successfully.
Line Leader: The line leader leads the class through the hallways and helps model safe walking.
Caboose: The caboose stays at the back of the line and helps make sure nobody gets left behind and closes door if needed.
Door Holder: This student holds doors open during transitions.
Greeter: The greeter welcomes classmates each morning with a smile.
Well Wisher: This student helps celebrate birthdays and special classroom moments.
Paper Passers: Assign one paper passer for each table group. This keeps distribution quick and organized.
Collect Papers: Collect completed work and bring it to the teacher.
Mail Collector: Pick up papers, notes, or mail from the office.
Teacher’s Assistant: Help with classroom tasks throughout the day.
Substitute Helper: This student helps explain classroom routines when a substitute teacher is present.
Attendance Helper: Assist with attendance routines each morning.
Calendar Helper: Help lead calendar time and identify the date.
Weather Reporter: Observe and report the daily weather.
Pointer: Use a pointer during lessons, songs, and shared reading activities.
Flag Holder: Assist during the Pledge of Allegiance.
Collect classroom trash and help keep the room clean.
Wipe tables after snack, centers, or projects.
Make sure pencils are sharpened and ready for learning.
Turn lights on and off when needed.
Help turn on classroom technology at the start of the day.
Make sure classroom iPads are plugged in and charging.
A favorite job if you have a classroom pet!
Pass out breakfast items if your school serves breakfast in the classroom.
Take lunchboxes to the cafeteria and bring them back when needed.
Walk with classmates to the nurse when appropriate.
The secret to successful kindergarten classroom jobs isn’t having fancy job charts.
It’s teaching the jobs.
Just like any classroom procedure, students need:
Spend time showing your little learners exactly what each job looks like. Practice together. Celebrate success.
When expectations are clear, classroom jobs become a powerful classroom management tool instead of another thing for you to manage.
If you’re a new kindergarten teacher, don’t feel like you need twenty different jobs right away.
Start with:
You can always add more later.
Remember, the goal of kindergarten classroom jobs is not to create extra work for yourself. The goal is to help students become responsible, independent members of your classroom community. And trust me—kindergarteners rise to the occasion every single time.
