If I could only give one piece of advice to a new kindergarten teacher, it would be this… Use music. Need students to clean up? There’s a song for that. Need to transition to the carpet? Sing. Practicing letters, numbers, shapes, sight words, or calendar skills? Add music! (Heidi Songs)

Little learners were never meant to sit in a chair all day. The more they move, the better they learn. Whenever I noticed my class getting wiggly, I don’t fight it—I use it. We might stand up and count by tens while tossing a beanbag, act out a story, go on a classroom letter hunt, or squeeze in a quick brain break. It only takes a couple of minutes, but it completely changes the energy in the room.

The first few weeks of school may feel repetitive, but every minute you spend teaching expectations will save you hours later in the year.
Let’s be honest… Kindergarteners don’t want to spend all day filling out worksheets. They want to touch, build, sort, match, create, and explore. That’s why your classroom needs to be filled with hands-on learning. File folder activities, literacy centers, math tubs, play dough, partner games, manipulatives, and interactive activities keep little learners thinking instead of simply completing work.
When children are actively involved, they stay engaged longer—and they remember what they’ve learned.
This might be the most important strategy of all. Your students watch you constantly. If you’re excited, they’re excited. If you’re smiling, encouraging, laughing, and celebrating the little victories, your students feel that energy too.
Does every day go perfectly? Absolutely not! Some days the glue sticks dry out, someone cries because their banana broke in half, and your carefully planned lesson lasts exactly six minutes before something unexpected happens.
That’s kindergarten. Give yourself grace. Your classroom doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be a place where little learners feel safe, loved, encouraged, and excited to come back tomorrow.
Those are the classrooms students remember forever.
Keeping kindergarteners engaged isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the little things well. Play music. Get kids moving. Teach routines. Make learning hands-on. Bring positive energy into your classroom every single day. Some days will still feel a little chaotic—and that’s okay. Kindergarten is full of surprises! But when your students are smiling, participating, asking questions, and excited to learn, you’ll know you’re doing something right.
And honestly? Those moments are what make teaching kindergarten the best job in the world.
