We’ve officially dived into the second semester of kindergarten, and our little learners are zooming ahead with their reading skills! Next up is “blends.” Here are my top Tips for Teaching Blends in Kindergarten that will make learning a blast for you and your eager students!

Learning to read is like assembling a puzzle—each piece needs teaching and practice! It’s all about helping your little learners become proficient readers!

Phonemic Awareness

Before you plunge into the world of blends, make sure your students have a rock-solid grip on their individual sounds! Try some rhyming games and sound isolation fun to help build that essential skill. (Rhyming For Little Learners)

Common Blends

Focus on teaching the most common consonant blends, such as “bl,” “cl,” “fl,” “gr,” “pl,” and “st.” Use flashcards or visual aids to display these blends clearly. (Blends BUNDLE No Prep Activities)

Multi-Sensory Approach

Mix it up with all kinds of learning styles—let’s get visual, auditory, and kinesthetic! Picture this: students squishing playdough to form blends, doodling them in the sand, or jamming with musical instruments to make some groovy sounds. Learning has never been this fun! Storytime

Grab those books that show off blends like they’re the stars of the show! As you read aloud, play a fun game of “Spot the Blend” and get your students tuning in to those sneaky sounds. (Click on image)

Create fun games such as blend bingo, matching games, or blend scavenger hunts. These interactive activities can make learning blends enjoyable and memorable.

Songs and Chants

Word Building Activities

Give your students a chance to unleash their inner word wizards by mixing and matching blends! Grab some letter tiles, magnetic letters, or even whiteboards and let the sound-smooshing fun begin as they whip up words like pros! (Favorite Small Group Literacy Tool for Little Learners)

Assessments
