Learning how to identify and write numbers is a foundational skill for the beginning of the kindergarten school year. We must provide many opportunities for number writing practice that are fun and engaging. here are my tips and activities for Learning to Write Numbers in Kindergarten.

As kindergarten teachers, it is essential for us to EXPLICITLY teach every academic concept including numbers. There are various methods to introduce numbers, but I’d like to share my favorite approach for teaching number identification and writing.

All About Numbers

I like to start by introducing numbers with an anchor chart in whole group. (This is a simple anchor chart resource and number book resource that will simplify your number instruction.) You can go to my TPT or KC Stores to download this resource.

I share a LOT about literacy, so naturally I have been getting a lot or requests about teaching numbers and math concepts!👩‍🏫 It’s been my experience that just like letters, numbers have to be explicitly taught and the best way that I have found is through this model that I am sharing today! 💗Of course, I have many more math practice games and activities to share, but this is a great start to explicit number instruction! #kindergartenchaos #tiktokteacher #handsonlearning #teachertok #learningisfun #teachertips #kindergartenteacher #kindergartenmath #finemotoractivity

Now that you have introduced numbers to your little learners, it’s time to focus on practice. It’s essential to offer a variety of activities that allow your students to practice writing their numbers.

Number Tracing: Create worksheets with dotted outlines of numbers 1-10. Encourage your students to trace the numbers using crayons or markers to improve their writing skills.

Sand or Salt Writing: Pour sand or salt into a shallow tray. Have your kinders use their fingers to write numbers in the sand, promoting sensory learning while practicing number formation.

Number Hunt: Hide number cards around the classroom or outdoor area. As your little learners find each card, they can write the number on a piece of paper, reinforcing their recognition and writing skills.

Playdough Numbers: Give your students playdough to roll out and shape into numbers. (Number Playdough Mats) This tactile activity helps them understand the structure of numbers while enhancing their fine motor skills.

Interactive Games: Incorporate number-related games such as bingo or matching games that require your students to write and recognize numbers. This makes learning fun and interactive, promoting engagement.

Storytime Integration: Read books that focus on numbers and counting. After the session, ask your students to write down their favorite number from the story, linking literacy with numeracy.

Number of the Day: Introduce a “Number of the Day” where your little learners can write that specific number in different ways (e.g., in the air, on paper, or using objects). This routine helps reinforce their understanding of numbers consistently.

Incorporating these activities into the daily routine can foster a love for numbers and enhance writing skills in a fun and engaging way!
