September is the perfect time to bring apples into your classroom! Whether you’re celebrating Johnny Appleseed Day, exploring fall themes, or just looking for hands-on, engaging activities, apples make learning fun and meaningful for little learners. I’m all about combining purposeful learning with easy prep and interactive play—so here are my favorite apple-themed activities for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade students.

Apple Tasting and Graphing
Kids love anything that involves food—and this activity is both educational and delicious! Bring in red, green, and yellow apples for a taste test. Let your kidnergarteners vote on their favorites, then create a class graph. This is a perfect way to incorporate:
Math skills (counting, graphing, comparing)
Oral language development (describing taste & texture)
Critical thinking (making predictions & analyzing results)
💡 Kindergarten Chaos Tip: Use real data collected from your class to make math more meaningful! You will find these activities in the Apple Literacy and Math Activities Bundle.
Apple Science: Labeling the Parts of an Apple
Instead of just talking about apples, we make them come to life in our classroom! First, we build a giant apple together on an anchor chart. I prepare the pieces ahead of time using butcher paper—skin, seeds, core, stem, and leaf. Then, as a class, we assemble it piece by piece, discussing each part and its function.
Once the apple is built, we label the parts together as a whole-group activity. This interactive approach helps students:
Learn and use science vocabulary (skin, flesh, core, seeds, stem, leaf)
Build observation skills
Practice reading and labeling skills
After participating in the whole group “we do” portion, it’s time for the gradual release to the “you do” stage. Students head back to their seats and complete their own Label an Apple worksheet, reinforcing what we just learned in a fun, independent way. (This worksheet can be found in the Apple Literacy and Math Activities Bundle in my KC or TPT Store.)
📸 Kindergarten Chaos Tip: Add a real apple dissection station at a science table for students to explore the inside of an apple up close!

Turn your literacy stations into an apple orchard of fun!
Letter Matching: Use apple cutouts with uppercase letters and baskets labeled with lowercase letters.
CVC Word Building: Write letters on small foam apples and let students “pick” the letters to build words.
Sight Word Apple Tree: Velcro sight words to an apple tree poster—students pick an apple, read the word, and “deliver” it to a basket.
💬 “Picking” apples to read sight words turns ordinary practice into an interactive game.

Apple Stamping Art
Cut apples in half, dip in paint, and let your little learners create apple prints on paper. This activity works on:
Fine motor skills
Creativity & self-expression
Shape recognition
🎨 Extend the activity by adding glitter, seeds, or textured paper to make it a sensory art project.

Why Apple Activities Work for Little Learners
Apple-themed activities are perfect for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade because they integrate math, literacy, science, and fine motor practice—all while keeping little learners engaged. Hands-on, thematic learning makes content memorable and boosts student participation.
