Scissors are one of the school supplies that all kindergarteners will use. Do you need some ideas on teaching kindergarteners how to use scissors? Here is how I instruct my little learners on this tool.
Since most, if not all, new kindergartener students do not know how to use scissors, it is incumbent upon teachers to instruct proper scissor usage. I have found that you must be very specific in school supply directions and implementation.
After you instruct your students on how to use the scissors, what to use the scissors on and what not to cut, then give your little ones practice.
Here is a song/chant that I use to teach the proper use of scissors.
In the “How To Use School Supplies” kit, there are printables for practicing cutting with scissors. (See below for more information on the activity.)
Teaching Kindergarteners How To Use Scissors is fun with songs and chants. Your students will be more engaged and love following the rules of scissor use when they were instructed in an entertaining way.
Let’s not leave out all of the other school supplies that your little ones probably have not used. Once again, you MUST be very specific and intentional when you are teaching how to use school supplies. Here is a packet I created to help with instructing your new students.
This packet is also available in spanish.
