As the end of October approaches, children are often preoccupied with candy. Whether or not you celebrate the holiday, it’s likely that your little learners will have candy on their minds. Why not incorporate candy into your lesson plan to teach important academic skills? Check out these October Candy Activities for Little Learners!
Incorporating candy into your kindergarten academic curriculum can be a fun and engaging way to make learning more exciting for your little learners.
Hands-on Activities
- Sorting and Counting: Use different types of candy to teach your students about sorting and counting. For example, you can have students sort M&M’s by color or count how many gummy bears are in a bag. (Engaging Counting Activities For Kindergartners)
- Ordering Numbers: This year long activity bundle includes Candy for the month of October.
- Graphing: Create a graphing activity using candy. Have your kindergarteners choose their favorite candy and graph the results. This can be a great way to introduce basic graphing concepts.
- Writing: Use candy as a writing prompt. For example, ask your little learners to write a story about a magical world made entirely out of candy.
- Write a List: Use this **FREEBIE** Candy List writing practice activity for your writing station, whole group, partners, or individual practice.
- Measurement: Use candy to teach your students about measurement. For example, you can measure the length of a piece of licorice or the diameter of a lollipop. (See “Butcher Paper Activities For Little Learners” for another measurement activity.)
- Science: Use candy to teach kindergarteners about science concepts. For example, you can have your students observe what happens when you drop different types of candy into water or soda.
Remember, while using candy in the classroom can be fun, it’s important to be mindful of allergies and to limit the amount of candy given to your students.
