Gingerbread is the perfect treat for the holidays! My students always enjoy learning about gingerbread men and creating gingerbread houses before leaving for winter break. To fully embrace the season, I make sure to have plenty of gingerbread books available for reading time.
Introducing the Gingerbread Man
Before delving into various versions of the Gingerbread Man story, it’s essential to provide your little learners with a foundation. Reading one of the ‘original’ Gingerbread Man books provides them with a background for retelling and comparing/contrasting different versions. Once they have a foundation, I them introduce the different renditions. All of the Gingerbread Man books are excellent for teaching and reinforcing retelling, as they utilize a simple pattern that includes characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end.
