October is Fire Safety Month For Kindergarteners. This may be your little learners first exposure to the subject. Do you have any specific activities planned to coincide with this month’s theme? Here are a few ideas to help make this year’s classroom experience more engaging and purposeful for Fire Safety Month.

As we enter Fire Safety Month for Kindergarteners, it’s important to make this topic both meaningful and fun for your little learners.

Books

Picture books are always my first step to introducing any new subject to little learners. This provides both information and an opportunity for discussion. Start with a class discussion about fire safety including if they know what firefighters do and why they are important. This can be a great way to introduce the topic and get them excited about learning more. Next, choose some books to read aloud. Here are a few of my favorites. (Find these and more at my Amazon Store.)

Fire Drill Practice

Most of the time, fire drill practice is done a a whole school, but you can get your class ready by discussing what they will need to do when and if the fire drill alarm goes off. Follow your schools rules and procedures, but remember your students are young and may need reassurance and comfort during the drill.

Conduct a fire drill practice with your students so they know what to do in case of an emergency. This can be done in a fun and interactive way, where the students can pretend to be firefighters and practice evacuating the classroom. (Teaching Fire Drill Procedures the Fun Way)

Fire Safety Activities

Having activities that are fun, engaging and purposeful is a must for any subject or theme. Fire Safety is no different. Here is an activity resource with 10 different literacy and math activities that are age and developmentally appropriate for your little learners. A great way to add in academics to this fun October theme. (Can get on TPT or from KC Store.) (More Fire Safety Activities For Kindergarten)

Create a Fire Safety Poster

Have your little learners create a poster about fire safety. They can draw pictures of the different things that can cause a fire, like matches or candles, and also draw pictures of things that can help prevent fires, like smoke detectors.

Fire Station Field Trip

Contact your local fire station and plan a file trip for your class. This can be a fun and informative way for your little learners to learn more about firefighters and fire safety. This is a fun way to expose your kindergarteners to the subjects they are learning about. Be sure to follow your schools policies and procedures for field trips.

If a field trip is not available, consider contacting your local fire station to see if they can come into the classroom to speak with your students.

By incorporating these activities into your classroom, you can make Fire Safety Month an engaging and educational experience for your Kindergarteners.
