How do you teach and practice CVC words with your little learners? Do you need some activities and ideas for this important literacy skill? Here are some amazing CVC Word Activities For Kindergarten.
Songs and Movements
Teaching your kindergarteners CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with songs and movements are always fun and engaging. Songs and chants help reinforce and cement this skill for your beginning readers. Here is a video showing a quick and easy song I use to teach these important beginning words.
Props and Picture/Word Cards
Do you use props to help little learners read CVC words? Pick up some mini slinkys at your local party or dollar store and use to teach CVC words. Use these CVC picture or word cards and have your students stretch out the slinky while sounding out the word. Not only is this engaging and meaningful, but it keeps little hands busy and create those brain/body connections that are so important with learning.
These CVC Picture & Word Cards are so easy to use for the kindergarten classroom. Just download, print and laminate. Place in your literacy station, pocket chart station or use with small groups. Perfect way to teach and practice segmenting & blending for beginning readers. Must have for your little learners!!
Arm Slide
Using the arm slide to teach and practice isolating and segmenting CVC words is a fun and visual way to teach and reinforce this literacy skill. This fun arm movement helps little learners visually and physically isolate each sound. They then can transfer the sounds they hear and write them on a whiteboard for further practice.
Sensory Bin CVC Word Activities For Kindergarten
Sensory bins are a perfect way for your kindergarten students to practice CVC words. Here is an activity that is fun, engaging and purposeful. Print and download the CVC cards and hide in the sensory bin. Next, give your students a clipboard and recording sheet. A card is chosen out of the bin. Students will then fill in the missing letters on the recording sheet, or match and write the CVC words. Your kindergarteners will love this activity!

Scanning and searching skills are an added bonus with this activity. Want more fun? Add mini magnifying glasses and your students will ask for this over and over. In addition to being easy to prep, this can be used for small group, partners, individual practice, and as a fast finisher activity.
Word Mapping
Having students “say, map, and write” CVC words is an effective way to teach and practice this literacy skill. This activity is both engaging and purposeful. Can be used in your literacy station, as a small group activity or can even extend to individual or partner practice. A must have for your kindergarten classroom.
